After defeating Espanyol in the quarter-final of Copa Del Rey, Barcelona had to face Valencia in Copa Del Rey Semi Final. The first leg at Camp Nou and as expected, Barcelona started dominating the game from the very first minute. It was Lionel Messi who took the wild shot outside the box which missed the target from a mile. In the space of 6 minutes, Barcelona tried a couple of times to score the goal but they failed in the final third.
However, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde decided to keep the new signing Philippe Coutinho on a bench and started with the other Brazilian Paulinho who just came from a minor injury. Coutinho started the game against Deportivo Alaves in the league game but got subbed off in the 2nd half.
In the 35th minute, Sergio Roberto received a yellow for his tackle which was harsh and well deserved for a card. Just after 5 minutes, It was Valencia’s mid-fielder Andreas Pereira who received a yellow card on a very back tackle when he went straight for Lionel Messi.
Till the first half, The scoreline was 0-0. Barcelona attempted 438 passes in the first half (79% possession), 324 more than Valencia (114, 21%).
Blaugrana started the second in a much aggressive manner as they kept on attacking. Philippe Coutinho came on in the 59th minute of the game in place of Aleix Vidal.
Barcelona got the free kick from a very good position but this time Lionel Messi failed to hit score a goal as the goal keeper punched away the ball.
Barcelona found the back of the net finally in the 65th minute of the game and it was none other than Messi and Suarez duo. Messi assisted the goal beautifully and Suarez made no mistake as he scored the first goal of Barcelona in this game.
