Barcelona has performed very well this season so far and credit goes to many senior players. From defenders to players in the mid-field and forwards. everyone played their part. The goalkeeper Ter Stegen has been the best goal keeper among the top 5 league. Recently The Blaugrana got defeated in the quarters against their derby rival Espanyol in the first leg which led to this massive issue.
Espanyol players celebrated the victory but in the second leg Barcelona won the game quite easily and qualified for the semi-final. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored both the goals for Barcelona. The team will now face Valencia in the semi-final.
However, after the victory, Gerard Pique downplayed Espanyol’s relevance in Catalunya by referring to the team as “Espanyol from Cornellá”, as if that part of town didn’t belong to the Catalan community.
According to Mundo Deportivo, these words could be considered as motivation for violence, forcing the tournament’s authorities to decide if those comments are worthy of a ban.
This went to some another level when Espanyol filed a case against the player’s words. The complaint also included Sergio Busquet’s words where he criticized Espanyol for celebrating way too much after their victory in the first leg.
The tournament’s judge will have to determine if these actions are worthy of a ban. If they believe so, Pique and Busquets could face the ban for some games and miss the semi-final game against Valencia on Thursday.
Gerard Pique signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2022 on Monday.
